Medals for Stags at UK Championships

The UK Championships in Manchester saw a weekend of mixed emotions for our senior athletes.

Adele Nicoll led the way at the weekend taking the shot put title for the second year running much to her great delight. As UK Champion she was delighted with her season’s best performance and is looking forward to improving on this as the season continues.

There was a lot at stake in the 1500m with many of the finalists already having the World Championships qualifying standard, Elliot Giles being one of six athletes in contention for a place at these championships.

As the skies darkened and the rain started to fall a large field set off to detemine which two athletes would secure their place for Budapest. A typical championship race the first two laps were fairly pedestrian but when the pace started to climb Elliot was well positionned.

He took to the lead down the home straight and looked as thouogh he would take another UK title but Neil Gourley just caught him as he raced down the inside. Elliot’s second place did secure his place on the team for the World Championships which he was very pleased about.

Our final medalist was Craig Murch who continued his good form at the UK Championships and for the third year in a row he secured a podium place. Throwing over 70m his season’s best helped him to the bronze medal.

Elsewhere, U20 Jessica Duncton, ran an excellent heat in the 100m hurdles to smash her pb and post a European U20 qualifying time. In the 400m we had high hopes of two medals but Rio Mitcham was devastated to false start in the heats ad after winning his heat Matthew Hudson-Smith pulled up with an injury in the final.

Congratulations to all our Stags who competed and we hope to celebrate more success later this year.
