The second league fixture was a greater challenge than the first as Newham and Essex Beagles put out a very strong team and it was a challenging day for our senior men.

Team Captain Leon Reid, back from the Rome Diamond League, once again led from the front in winnning the 200m and taking third in the 100m A race. U23 LDC athlete Kaie Chambers-Brown was first in the 100m B race just taking it on the line. Another of our LDC athletes, U20 Alwyane Campbell also acquitted himself well with a third in the 200m B race. In the middle distance races the team gained good points with many athletes running season's bests. In the 1500m Tom Beasley continued his good from with a personal best of 3.53.15.

The 3000m was a good race for Birchfield as Kadar Omar Abdullah was second overall and Omar Ahmed won the B race. We also were able to field two athletes in the steeplechase for a good accumulation of points.

Jack Phipps had a solid day in the field with a second place in the pole vault and sixth in the long jump. Our second winner on the day was Craig Murch in the A hammer an event where we scored moaximum points as Joe Broomfield won the B string.

The final events of the day saw a good win in the 4 x 100m relay and a sixth place in the 4 x 400m relay. With a number of key athletes missing through injury Birchfield finished in second behind Newham and Essex Beagles who now top the table by the virtue of more match points as both teams have fifteen league points. The league is all to play for and team manager, Dave Lawrence is determined to put out a strong team at the next match on 6 July in Sheffield.
